[Le présentateur] Autre belle histoire.
[The presenter] Another beautiful story.
Costa-Gavras, I have read that when you came to France, at a rather young age, from Greece to study at the Sorbonne, you didn't necessarily have in mind to become a filmmaker or a director, but you wanted to be a writer.
[Costa-Gavras] I wanted to write, to learn to write, and the Sorbonne is an ideal place to learn this.
And then I discovered one day the French Cinematheque.
And I saw ... the first film I saw was Greed by Erich von Stroheim.
I said to myself: cinema can make... - because it must also be said that until then the films I had seen were westerns, action movies, and so on.
There was censorship in Greece where I came from.
We would not really see the great classics.
I realized that cinema could make great classics.
Comme la tragédie, comme le grand théâtre.
Like tragedy, like great theater.
Et alors j'ai décidé peu à peu de voir... - j'ai vu beaucoup, beaucoup de films.
And then I decided bit by bit to watch... - I watched many, many films.
Langlois explained them very well, he made extraordinary translations.
He was not talking about the story at all, he was talking about content.
He was talking about why the film is made like this and what it is talking about.
So I discovered this, and I said to myself, that's it, one can write with pictures.
[The presenter] One can also write with pictures...
